Dimensioning in Paper Space

Traditionally, dimensioning in model space is the preferred method for dimensioning a drawing, whether it’s a single view, multi-view, complex or just a simple drawing.

However, there are some occassion that, we need to resort in dimensioning our drawing in Paper Space, instead of dimensioning in Model space. One occassion is when you’re doing a large drawing and in need of a keyplan for presentation. A large drawing like this appear in layout (paper space) as part by part only, so one or maybe some of its dimension may not see in layout. Thats the time dimensioning in paper space might be needed.

Dimensioning in layout is the simplest dimensioning method. Dimensions are created in paper space by selecting model space objects or by specifying object snap locations on model space objects. In doing this method, you have to set first for your dimension style. Usually when I’m doing dimension in paper space, I prefer my dimension style  be name as Dim-1isto1 so that its easy for me to remember that it’s the dimension style for layout .

So, in order for you to start dimensioning in paper space make a dimension style intended only for layout (paper space).  At the command prompt, type DDIM, and a dimension style manager dialog box will pop-up (fig.1), from there, create a new style by clicking the NEW button (fig.2 and fig.3), then after creation, at the FIT tab, make your overall scale same as your scale in model space, ( ex. 1:500, fig.4).

After you set your over scale of your new dimension style, go to the Primary units tab, and set your scale factor to 500, same scale as your overall scale and scale on your model space. This is to ensure you’re getting same dimension from model space as when your doing dimensioning in paper space (fig. 5 and fig.6).

After you set your Scale Factor, go to Text tab, and set your text style for your newly created dimension style. In my example I created a simplex text, it depends to you what text you’re going to use. As I have said, I created a new text style base on simplex. But, before that I have to create a TEXT STYLE, so at the command prompt, I type ST, or STYLE to create a new text style intended for my new dimension style (fig. 7).

After you created your new text style for your dimension style, you are now set to do dimensioning in paper space.

Thats all for now.
